The Nigeria’s national electricity grid suffered another collapse just hours after a previous failure on Monday, October 14. The first incident occurred at approximately 6:18 PM, leading to a significant drop in power generation from 3.87 gigawatts at 5 PM to 3.56 at 6pm and then to 0.00 gigawatts by 7 PM. This resulted in widespread blackouts across the country.
On Tuesday morning , the grid suffers another collapse at 9:17 AM, causing power supply to plummet to zero across all regions by 10 AM, leading to another nationwide blackout. This incident marks the second grid collapse in less than 24 hours, raising serious concerns about the stability of the nation’s electricity supply.
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company also confirmed this latest collapse, notifying customers of the loss of power supply across their network and assuring them that efforts were underway to restore service. “We are currently working with our partners and hope for a speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as the power supply is restored,” the company stated.
The repeated grid failures have raised significant concerns regarding the stability of Nigeria’s electricity supply. Princewill Okorie, Executive Director of the Electricity Consumer Protection Advocacy Centre, expressed disappointment over the situation, highlighting that customers, especially those without meters, would still incur charges despite the outages.
He questioned the government’s efforts to prevent such occurrences, especially given the recent increase in electricity tariffs.
