Art in Heart Gallery Limited has extended its passion for creativity to more than 200 internally displaced persons in New Kuchingoro, Abuja, with the goal of inspiring hope and fostering transformation through art and crafts.
Designed to connect internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their creative essence, the initiative enables IDPs to produce art and crafts that will be beneficial within and beyond their community.
Evans Chinedum, National Coordinator and Creative Director of Art in Heart Gallery, speaking during an outreach event in Abuja, said, “Art can help IDPs move beyond mere survival to a life where they can truly thrive.” He emphasised the power of art not just as a form of expression, but as a tool for healing, empowerment, and resilience.
The skills empowerment initiative teaches various art and craft skills, including face painting, tie and dye, necklace making, batik, and clothing production.
Kwaghe Stephanie, Community Manager of Art in Heart Gallery, noted that beyond teaching skills, the initiative encourages IDPs to view art as a potential business venture. “Art is not only for expression, it’s also a lucrative business,” she said.
The initiative has received positive responses from the IDPs, with beneficiaries expressing gratitude for the training and pledging to make the best use of the knowledge gained.
Tahir Ali, a staff member of the IDP camp, praised the initiative, saying, “I believe the skills acquired will lead to a brighter future for the participants.” Sunday Emmanuel, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the training and pledged to make the best use of the knowledge gained.
The Art in Heart Gallery is seeking partnerships with NGOs and other organisations to expand the scope of their empowerment efforts. Kwaghe Stephanie said, “We are seeking partnerships to ensure sustainability and build on momentum.”
