BIC, a stationery company, has reaffirmed its commitment to improving education in Nigeria, as it marked the 75th anniversary of its Cristal ballpoint.
In a statement, BIC noted that the Cristal ballpoint pen, first produced in 1950 by French inventor Marcel Bich, has sold over 100 billion units and is a staple in classrooms, offices, and homes.
Anthony Amahwe, the General Manager of BIC Nigeria, speaking during the launch of a year-long global campaign to honour the pen’s enduring legacy, said the brand remains focused on delivering “simple, reliable and accessible solutions that enhance everyday life.”
Amahwe said, “As we celebrate this 75-year milestone, we are not only reflecting on the past but building a bold future. The BIC Cristal has empowered millions to learn, write, draw, and dream. We are proud of its legacy and even more committed to expanding its impact across Nigeria and the continent.”
BIC pledged to continue supporting learning initiatives in Nigeria as part of its global goal to improve learning conditions for 250 million children worldwide by 2025 under its ‘Writing the Future, Together’ programme.
The firm noted that it partners with local schools, non-governmental organisations, teachers and parents during Global Education Week to equip classrooms with writing tools. It added that this effort ensures that more students are prepared for the school year, regardless of socioeconomic status.
BIC added that the pen makes a cultural impact through its Art Master Africa competition, which featured over 6,000 participants from across the continent, with seven Nigerian artists recognised at national and regional levels.
BIC recently expanded the programme with the Art Master Africa Metaverse Gallery, a virtual exhibition space showcasing artworks from past and present winners. According to BIC, young artists promoted personal narratives and cultural identity on a global scale on the platform.
BIC confirmed that it makes all Cristal pens in its factories and meets strict environmental and performance standards, including the French NF Environnement Ecolabel for eco-conscious production.
