Fast food giant, Burger King Nigeria has officially launched its first restaurant in Anambra State, expanding its national footprint with a vibrant opening in Awka on July 19, 2025. Located along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, the new outlet becomes the 24th Burger King location in Nigeria since the brand’s debut in 2021.
The grand opening was a lively celebration of food, culture, and community. In attendance were top state dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyeka Ibezim, and Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Pius Okoye. Guests enjoyed performances by cultural dancers, upbeat music from DJs, games for children, and Instagram-worthy photo booths bearing the message: “Awka Eze Abiala”, Igbo for “Awka, the King has arrived.”
Burger King Nigeria’s Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Rushdi Ibrahim, shared insights into the decision to open in Awka, noting the city’s energy and potential.
“We considered several locations, including Onitsha, but Awka stood out as the first spot in Anambra state. It has a youthful spirit, a growing population, and a welcoming urban atmosphere,” he said. He also revealed that Burger King aims to establish a presence in at least 15 Nigerian states by the end of 2025, with plans already in motion to bring a store to Onitsha.
Welcoming the international brand, Hon. Chinedu Okafor, Mayor of Awka South, highlighted the positive impact on the local economy: “This investment means more jobs for our youth, increased tourism, and a stronger economic base for our community,” he remarked.
Local residents were equally enthusiastic. Mrs. Jane Udoka, a customer visiting from Lagos, said: “I always enjoy Burger King whenever I’m in Lagos. It’s exciting to have them here in Awka now.” Mr. Obiora Eze, a local entrepreneur, added: “It’s great to see global brands coming into our city. Their burgers and fries are top-notch, and this will elevate food culture in Awka.”
Miss Amara Okonkwo, a university student, shared: “We used to look forward to Burger King only when visiting Lagos. Now it’s right here. The restaurant is clean, the staff are friendly, and the vibes are amazing.”
Burger King Nigeria reiterated its mission to serve high-quality meals with a customer-first approach and a commitment to local relevance.
With its Awka debut, the brand strengthens its position in Nigeria’s fast-growing Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) industry, serving up a taste of global flavor while creating opportunities for communities across the country.
