Heirs Insurance Launches N9 Million Hackathon To Empower Nigerian University Innovators

Heirs Insurance Group (HIG), one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing insurance companies, has unveiled the first edition of its Heirs Insurance Hackathon, offering a total prize pool of N9 million to students across Nigerian universities and tertiary institutions. The initiative is aimed at harnessing digital solutions and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive innovation in the insurance sector.

The Hackathon encourages students to develop solutions that address real-world challenges within the insurance value chain, including claims processing, underwriting, distribution, operational efficiency, and customer experience. Applications are open until February 16, 2026, with the winning teams to be announced at the grand finale in April 2026. The top three teams will share the N9 million prize pool.

The programme is delivered in partnership with Redtech, the digital payments subsidiary of Heirs Holdings. Redtech will provide technical support, review submissions, and evaluate ideas for creativity, technical feasibility, scalability, and real-world impact, ensuring that innovations can meaningfully transform the insurance landscape.

Peace O. Philips, Chief Digital Officer at Heirs Insurance Group, said the Hackathon provides a platform for young innovators to apply technology to economic challenges. “Africa’s future will be shaped by young people who can turn their creativity and technology skills into solutions for real problems. Through this Hackathon, students will engage directly with the insurance industry, develop practical solutions, and help build a more inclusive and efficient financial ecosystem,” she said.

Heirs Insurance Group, the insurance arm of Heirs Holdings, operates across Nigeria with a rapidly expanding retail footprint and a strong digital presence. The group comprises Heirs General Insurance Limited, Heirs Life Assurance Limited, and Heirs Insurance Brokers, serving both corporate and individual clients nationwide. The company has established itself as a leading driver of financial inclusion and digital insurance adoption in Nigeria.

The Hackathon reflects HIG’s broader commitment to youth empowerment, digital skills development, and innovation-led financial inclusion. Participants will gain mentorship, industry exposure, and hands-on experience addressing actual insurance sector challenges, providing a pathway for students to contribute to Nigeria’s growing fintech and insurtech ecosystem.

This programme underscores Heirs Insurance Group’s mission to democratise access to insurance products while fostering a generation of tech-savvy professionals capable of shaping Africa’s financial services future.
