The SOHCAHTOA Foundation has awarded scholarships to no fewer than 100 students from various tertiary institutions across Nigeria, as part of the maiden edition of its scholarship initiative.
The initiative, aimed at contributing to the advancement of education in Nigeria and across Africa, attracted 18,000 applications. Following a thorough selection process, the winners were chosen to benefit from the scholarship programme.
Mrs. Solape Fayemi, co-founder of the SOHCAHTOA Foundation, disclosed this information on Tuesday in Abuja. She explained that the foundation’s undergraduate scholarship is one of its key educational programmes, designed to provide support to students enrolled in public tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Fayemi highlighted that the foundation is committed to the transformative power of education, stressing that the initiative was conceived with the goal of helping students excel in their academic journeys. “Among the several educational support initiatives the Foundation has launched, the Back-to-School drive and the Undergraduate Scholarship Programme stand out,” she said.
The Back-to-School initiative is focused on supporting pupils and students in public schools by providing essential resources such as books, writing materials, shoes, and bags. The scholarship programme, meanwhile, is specifically targeted at undergraduate students attending public tertiary institutions in Nigeria, with the aim of ensuring they receive access to quality education.
Fayemi added, “These initiatives are designed to ensure that pupils and students benefit from basic and quality education. The foundation is expanding its reach beyond just empowerment, and this year, in the first edition of the scholarship, 100 beneficiaries were selected from over 18,000 applicants across all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. We look forward to making an even greater impact in the upcoming academic year.”
Each scholarship recipient will receive an annual sum of N250,000, which will be used to cover tuition fees for the duration of their respective degree programmes. Fayemi expressed the foundation’s belief in helping young people achieve their dreams and become better contributors to society.
“The government alone cannot carry the full responsibility of providing quality education. Private organisations must step in and contribute to the development of society,” Fayemi remarked. “It is essential that we use our resources to make a positive impact on our communities.”
She also advised the scholarship beneficiaries to maintain strong academic performance and submit their results at the end of each academic session in order to qualify for the renewal of the scholarships.
